Since the 1800s, straw bale homes have been built in the United States.
Civitas has built four such homes in northeast Kansas. Via the use
of wheat straw (an agriculture byproduct) and a locally available
labor force (K-State students) we are able to create healthy, well-built
homes with superior insulation-temperature & noise control.
In 2001, Civitas worked with Chrysalis Farm to build their straw bale home. Visit
their site for a detailed account of the building process. Chrysalis Farm and other Straw Bale Homes built by Civitas were featured in
a 'Sunflower Journeys' episode on PBS.
